Why We Started the Karnivore Korner

If we haven’t met, I’m Zach Heern. Disciple of Jesus, husband, father, business owner, author, and long-term keto dieter!
This weekly newsletter was birthed out of my passion for carnivore and ketogenic diets, which is why I “cleverly” combined the two to create the name, Karnivore Korner.
In March of 2020 (the year we all hate), at 31 years old, I was the heaviest and unhealthiest I have ever been. I was 40 lbs heavier than I am today, had chronic inflammation, aches and pains, and low energy. I was working a demanding job that was burning me out, helping plant a new church in Gainesville, FL, raising children, and burning the candle at both ends.
My family and I were set to go on a cruise at the end of March 2020. Not feeling too happy about my appearance, I decided to try the keto diet out for a few weeks leading up to the trip. Thanks to the ‘Rona, our trip was canceled and we went to the mountains instead. When I first started keto, it was meant to be temporary. I just wanted to quickly lose a few pounds. I didn’t really have a definitive end date but if you’d asked me if I would still be living a keto lifestyle more than 3 years later, I would have laughed.
After getting through the initial “keto flu,” I began to experience some amazing benefits. My aches and pains went away, my weight was falling off, I had more energy and mental clarity, and the rest is history. In the first 3 months, I lost nearly 40 lbs and felt better than I had in 10 years. I couldn’t go back to the Standard American Diet (the SAD diet).
Despite a hectic schedule and numerous demands and responsibilities, I learned it was both possible and practical to live a more ancestral-based diet in a busy modern world. I began to dabble in carnivore here and there and have found many wonderful and knowledgeable influencers in this space. I realized that everything I had been taught was completely wrong, motivated by money, and literally making all of us sick.
I have a passion for busy mothers and fathers who need all of the energy and advantages they can get to sustainably keep up with modern demands without burning out. Although there are many factors that influence this, and these will be their own topics on this newsletter, diet is one of the if not THE most important factors for leading a healthy, sustainable modern-day lifestyle.
This newsletter isn’t my first attempt at trying to dispel so much of the disinformation surrounding diet and lifestyle here in the US. A couple of years ago, I wrote a short book on how to live a ketogenic lifestyle in the modern world. It wasn’t my best work and I was paid next to nothing but I’m glad that the information is out there in the world!
Join me in returning to many of the diet and lifestyle principles of early nomads and hunter-gatherers. These individuals ate low-carb ketogenic diets for thousands of years and did not experience many of the health problems we face today. If you want to feel better and have more energy for the demands of life and the things that are important, join me!
